Balance Your Nervous System and Improve Your Immune System with Chiropractic

At its very foundation, chiropractic care helps improve the function of the nervous system by making adjustments to the spine. The nervous system can be complicated and convoluted to those who aren’t versed in it, but the more you understand your nervous system the more you understand chiropractic care and how it works.

One large part of the nervous system is the vagus nerve. It plays a vital role in your entire body and its balance.  As chiropractors, we’re able to access the vagus nerve without surgery or medication to balance your nervous system and improve your immune system.

What is the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body which originates in the brain, travels down from the neck and then passes around the digestive system, liver, spleen, pancreas, heart, and lungs. This nerve is a major component in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is also referred to as the ‘rest and digest’ part, versus the commonly mentioned ‘fight or flight’ system (AKA sympathetic nervous system).

The vagus has many responsibilities, since 75% of its function is for sending signals from the brain to the organs it controls. It regulates heart rate, plays a vital role in blood pressure, and can improve gastrointestinal considering problems, to name a few responsibilities.

It is also important to note that the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest) and the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) must work together and complement one another for your immune system to work correctly. If these nervous systems are not balanced, it can cause many types of adverse health conditions and disease.

How can we measure the productivity of the vagus nerve?

The productivity of the vagus nerve is referred to as vagal activity or vagal tone. The strength of your vagal tone can be measured by heart rate variability, which is directly related to the regulatory system and in turn, your efficiency and health.

If a person has low vagal activity, or decreased activity of the vagus nerve, the body will experience irregularities regarding the organs and digestive system that the vagus nerve controls. If the brain cannot interpret the information coming in, the brain will not know how to fix any problems going on.

How does the vagus nerve relate to the immune system?

The first response of your immune system is to inflame the stressed, injured or infected area to protect the rest of your body. Inflammation is perfectly normal as long as it’s temporary. Once this stress, injury or infection has been addressed by your immune system and it feels your body is protected, your body begins to relax and restore balance.

This is when your parasympathetic nervous system kicks in, which again, the vagus nerve is a major component of. Stress caused by the injury or infection is reduced, heart and breathing rates return to normal, and inflammation begins to dissipate.

However, if this nervous system is not working properly, heart and breathing rates can stay elevated and inflammation can stick around, and thus become chronic. This opens the door to health problems. But this is where chiropractic care can help.

Why the balance of your nervous system is so important

Keeping your vagus nerve and your entire nervous system healthy is vital to overall health and wellness. A healthy nervous system keeps all other systems of your body functioning properly—including your immune system.

If your vagus nerve is not functioning properly it can lead to a long list of problematic health conditions associated with chronic inflammation. These conditions include but are not limited to:

  • Susceptibility to infections
  • Acid reflex
  • Skin conditions
  • Chronic pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Diabetes

Since the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves compromise the nervous system, receiving a chiropractic adjustment can help your nervous system and your vagus nerve function better. This, in turn, helps your entire body work better.

Our team at Millard Family Chiropractic & Wellness is committed to restoring and maintaining the overall health of the nervous system, including the vagus nerve, and your immune system. If you would like to find out more about how chiropractic care can help you, contact us today.

Constipation Relief through Chiropractic Care

chiropractic for constipation

Who knew chiropractic care could help with constipation? Well, we did!

Did you know over 1 million hospitalizations are due to constipation each year? Constipation most commonly affects women, the elderly, and infants, but anyone is susceptible.

Constipation can be a very uncomfortable feeling, but it’s also unhealthy for your body to not be able to get rid of waste.

Symptoms of constipation can include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Back pain
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Anal Fissures

Constipation can be caused by a number of things, including not enough water, not being active, stress, certain medications, or changes in your diet.

Constipation can also be caused by misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine. The spine connects to the celiac ganglion, which connects to special nerves in the intestine that make the muscles in the anus push.

If you are suffering from constipation, it’s incredibly likely that you have a spinal misalignment, or a subluxation. Subluxations in L1 and L2 are common causes of constipation. If you believe you are constipated we suggest you come in for an exam. When given the exam, our chiropractors take an x-ray to determine whether or not there is an issue chiropractic care can help.

If it is an issues chiropractic care can help with, then you can begin treatments right away! How long it takes to clear up can depend on age, the severity of the issues, and nerve regeneration. Some take a few treatments while others may take a series, but we guarantee to work with you till you see results.

If chiropractic can’t help, laser therapy may also be an option. At Millard Family Chiropractic and Wellness, we often use this laser therapy for constipation when there is a high emotional component. We use a cold laser on acupuncture points that can help the cells reproduce, reducing pain and inflammation in the area. However, this is for special cases, as most often chiropractic can cure the constipation.

From babies to seniors, chiropractic care is a great way to relieve the discomfort from constipation and bring back balance into the body. If you are interested in trying chiropractic care to relieve your constipation, contact us today. We also offer pediatric chiropractors for children and babies also suffering constipation.

The Latest Tech-Induced Body Ailment: Text Neck

Did you realize that the average American spends 24 hours a week on their cellphone? The numbers are alarming and only growing, despite many health concerns. Cellphones have been known to cause eye vision problems, increased levels of stress, less sleep, and most recently, text neck.

Text neck” is the term many are using to describe the neck pain and spine damage from looking down at your cell phone or tablet too often and for too long.

The gravitational pull on your head when it is aimed down creates an increased weight being forced onto your spine. The human head weighs, on average, about 12 pounds. However, the further the neck bends down, the greater the weight on the spine. At a 15 degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, but at 60 degrees, it can reach to 60 pounds of weight.

This added weight can lead to early wear-and-tear on the spine, degeneration and even potential surgery. That’s a huge burden that comes with having a smartphone. But people aren’t changing their bad habits anytime soon.

How to Repair Text Neck Problems with Chiropractic

Text neck is essentially extremely poor posture. The first thing to do is to train yourself not to look down when you are using your phone, tablet, or even computer.  Keeping your head up, however, is just the start.

Be sure to also exercise regularly. Find small exercises you can do at home that can stretch out your neck, shoulders, and back. Having your “good posture muscles” strong can be very beneficial.

With serious cases of neck and back pain, turn to chiropractic care for additional help. Without drugs or surgery, chiropractic care can help bring back balance to your spine and neck. Chiropractors make adjustments by using hands-on manipulation to restore joint function and support the nervous system.

A visit into your local chiropractor, like Millard Family Chiropractic & Wellness, can bring back the balance your body needs to combat the hours spent on your phone each day. We aren’t asking that you stop using technology; we just ask that you add chiropractic care into your regimen of healthcare to help reduce long term effects such as onset degeneration and biomechanical changes.
