Your Summer Shoes may be Causing Plantar Fasciitis

Summer is finally here, which means outdoor activities, pool days and warm sunny weather! This past winter felt unbearably long here in Omaha, so we think we speak for just about everyone when we say the summer temps are definitely welcome.

As the weather warms up, many tuck away their heavy boots and shoes to bring out the sandals and flip-flops. However, many aren’t aware that this transition can be really hard on our feet.

When our feet are not supported properly, the tissues in the arch of our feet suffer. When these tissues, or fascia, become overly stretched, it is referred to as plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It normally causes a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning, often decreasing the more you’re up and moving. But as soon as you sit down and take a break, your next steps are painful again.

In addition to the pain you feel in your feet, you can feel the effects of plantar fasciitis throughout your body, including the knees, pelvis and spine. This makes having arch support in your shoes all the more important.

Factors that Increase your Risk of Developing Plantar Fasciitis

Though plantar fasciitis can arise without an obvious cause, there are some specific risk factors that we see commonly in patients suffering from plantar fasciitis. These include:

  • Certain types of exercise including running or dancing.
  • Plantar fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60.
  • Foot mechanics, such as being flat-footed or having a high arch.
  • Being overweight. Excess pounds put extra stress on your plantar fascia.
  • Jobs that keep you on your feet, such as teachers or factory workers.

Number one is to invest is some footwear that offers good arch support, regardless of if they are boots or sandals. Flip flops do come in varieties with more support for your arches now, and recommend people seek those out.
