Were you aware that over 50 million Americans—just over 20 percent of the adult population—have chronic pain? And, did you know that about 20 million of them have “high-impact chronic pain,” pain that is severe enough that it frequently limits life and work activities?
These numbers, published by the CDC in 2018, are staggering.
“Pain is a component of many chronic conditions, and chronic pain is emerging as a health concern on its own, with negative consequences to individual persons, their families, and society as a whole,” reported James Dahlhamer, Ph.D., of the CDC’s Division of Health Interview Statistics.
Due to the widespread number of people suffering from pain, the number of opioid scripts is through the roof. In 2017, according to the American Chiropractic Association, more than 47,000 people died from overdoses involving opioids. Within the same year, another 2 million people abused or were dependent on opioids.
That’s why non-drug approaches to healing pain have become such an important first line of defense when it comes to pain and potential addiction caused by consistent use of pain medications. It could be the difference between living your life and having your life dictated by pain.
Chiropractic Care to Relieve Pain
Chiropractic adjustments focus on spinal manipulation to relieve pain—anything from lower back pain to neck pain, shoulder pain, and even headaches. “Spinal manipulation” is a term used for any kind of therapeutic movement of the spine. It involves the application of quick but strong pressure on a joint between two vertebrae of the spine to relieve tension.
The key here is, chiropractic care can relieve your pain without the use of pain killers.
A new report from the American Academy of Pain medicine stated that patients who have visited a chiropractor for a musculoskeletal pain condition were 49% less likely to receive an opioid prescription than their counterparts who went to other healthcare providers.
In 2017, the American College of Physicians published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, updated its guidelines for the treatment of acute and chronic lower back pain to recommend first using non-invasive, non-drug treatments including; heat therapy, massage, acupuncture and spinal manipulation (a centerpiece of chiropractic care).
Chiropractic as a Safe Treatment Option
Chiropractic services are some of the safest drug-free, noninvasive therapies available for treatment for back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches and other musculoskeletal complaints. We see patients every day who have tremendous relief from pain and are able to resume daily activities as simple as walking, taking care of themselves and playing with kids and grandkids. That’s why so many are turning toward chiropractors to help with their pain! They just want to lead normal lives again.
