The Latest Tech-Induced Body Ailment: Text Neck

Did you realize that the average American spends 24 hours a week on their cellphone? The numbers are alarming and only growing, despite many health concerns. Cellphones have been known to cause eye vision problems, increased levels of stress, less sleep, and most recently, text neck.

Text neck” is the term many are using to describe the neck pain and spine damage from looking down at your cell phone or tablet too often and for too long.

The gravitational pull on your head when it is aimed down creates an increased weight being forced onto your spine. The human head weighs, on average, about 12 pounds. However, the further the neck bends down, the greater the weight on the spine. At a 15 degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, but at 60 degrees, it can reach to 60 pounds of weight.

This added weight can lead to early wear-and-tear on the spine, degeneration and even potential surgery. That’s a huge burden that comes with having a smartphone. But people aren’t changing their bad habits anytime soon.

How to Repair Text Neck Problems with Chiropractic

Text neck is essentially extremely poor posture. The first thing to do is to train yourself not to look down when you are using your phone, tablet, or even computer.  Keeping your head up, however, is just the start.

Be sure to also exercise regularly. Find small exercises you can do at home that can stretch out your neck, shoulders, and back. Having your “good posture muscles” strong can be very beneficial.

With serious cases of neck and back pain, turn to chiropractic care for additional help. Without drugs or surgery, chiropractic care can help bring back balance to your spine and neck. Chiropractors make adjustments by using hands-on manipulation to restore joint function and support the nervous system.
