June is Scoliosis Awareness Month

Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, affecting 2 to 3% of the population. We often think of scoliosis in adolescents, and although the most common age for onset is between 10 and 15 years old, anyone, of any age can be affected by this condition. 85% of scoliosis cases will be classified as idiopathic, meaning there is no real cause for the curvature. The other 15% will be congenital, meaning there is a larger underlying condition affecting the spine.

Some common signs of scoliosis are shoulder imbalance, rib cage more pronounced on one side, hips not level, a longer leg, or you feel the body overall tilts to one side. Depending on the severity of the curve internal organs such as the heart, lungs, or digestive system can also be affected.

Although there is no cure for scoliosis, early detection and early intervention can help reduce the impact to the individuals quality of life. As chiropractors we utilize x-rays and a manual exam to determine the best treatment plan. Our job is to help reduce the progression of the curve, keep everything moving to reduce restriction in mobility, and keep your nerves happy so your body can communicate.

640 Muscles, 206 Bones, 45 Miles of Nerves,
60,000 Miles of Blood Vessels

That's what it takes to stand up straight.  May is Posture Month, so how's your posture?
First, toss out the idea of perfect posture.  There is no perfect posture, but there are better and worse positions for our bodies.

We need to understand that posture is not just about sitting straight, or standing tall.  Posture is how we control those 640 muscles and 206 bones as we move, as well as while we are sitting still and standing tall, because control determines how that 45 miles of nerves and 60,000 miles of blood vessels work.  Inhibiting those nerves and blood vessels through poor posture has been proven to lead to breathing problems as well as an increased risk to heart disease.  So although back and neck pain are what we know poor posture leads to, posture is about so much more than that.

Quick Tips to Better Posture
1.  Check your posture!  At it's most simple form you can just snap a photo of yourself from various angles.  Take a peek at your ears, shoulders, hips, and knees.  How are things stacking up?  If you want a more detailed analysis, let us know.  We'd be happy to do a full posture analysis for you.

2. Move.  The human body was meant to move regularly.  Set a timer to remind your self to stand-up, stretch, or change position at least every 90 minutes.

3.  Adjust Your Environment.  With most adults having full time jobs that require repetitive sitting or motions, check your set-up.  Can you rearrange things to keep the computer screen at eye level, the keyboard so your elbows are at a comfortable 90 degrees.  Or if you are on your feet throughout the day, how are your shoes?  Do they provide the support your body needs.  Can you adjust your environment to limit repetitive twisting or bending motions?

Supporting Strong Posture
As you begin to implement regular movement and adjustments to your environment, remember to support your body through exercise and regular adjustments.  Many of us are a bit out of alignment from years of poor posture and body awareness.  Regular adjustments can help train your body to maintain the alignment your posture needs.  This is never more true then when starting or changing an exercise routine.  Being aligned when working out will reduce your risk of injury and help the body recover quickly from the harder workouts.

More from the Doctors
During the week of May 11th, join us at 12:30 each day via our social media outlets for a Posture Academy.  We'll address office ergonomics, stretches, exercises, and so much more to help you look good and move well.
